|Faculty of the Month - Aaron M. French|
Professor Aaron M. French is the Assistant Professor of Management Information Systems (MIS) here at Kyungpook National University. Professor French possesses an undergraduate degree in MIS as well as a Master’s in Business Administration, both earned at Western Kentucky University. Before going on to achieve a PhD in MIS from Mississippi State University, he spent one year as a computer programmer/systems analyst, one year as a database administrator, and two years working in e-commerce as a web developer and programmer; the Professor also has three years experience with web and e-business consulting.
Back when he was still living in the US, Professor French assisted Korean exchange students at Mississippi State University. The undertaking led to his recommendation to KNU by a senior Korean professor under whom he worked. Professor French’s acceptance of the offer was influenced by what he describes as “very positive trips to Korea” that were made possible by the same senior professor.
Professor French’s greatest passion as a teacher is giving his students the best chance to succeed in their scholastic and professional careers. This passion was created out of the change and improvement he feels was fostered in him by professors in his own life. The Professor states that he gathers the most satisfaction and enjoyment from working with students who are driven to learn.
Being in a Korean university has allowed the Professor to find new ways of making the learning process easier for students who have to overcome language and cultural differences so that students from various countries may comprehend and retain crucial information on the subjects he teaches. Aside from being published in top journals in his field, one moment that Professor French remembers most proudly is that of helping a student who believed earning an MA in the United States was out of reach to achieve his goal of being accepted into a prestigious university. According to French, this is what makes his job worthwhile.
Work is not the only thing that keeps Professor French going throughout the week, however. Computer programming, sports, and motorcycles are a few of his other passions. He was part of the American football team for his university, although, he says, basketball rivals in enjoyment. Travel holds particular interest as well, and Professor French has been all around Korea, from Seoul to Jeju Island, and many places in between.Though he has worked hard and has had substantial success in his career, Professor French lives by a simple rule: choose to be happy. Amidst everything that may cause stress or sadness, he remains satisfied and healthy in his life, and he credits this to following that important piece of advice.
