|Student of the Month - Aileen Anthony|
Aileen Anthony is a second year student from the University of Malaysia studying as an exchange student here in KNU. An avid lover of Geography, Aileen explains that being a geographer puts her at the forefront of investigating ways in which to understand, solve, and alleviate interesting matters related to the environment in which we live. In terms of future prospects, Aileen believes that geography is one of the most employable and promising subjects due to its diverse nature and its ability to link to other subjects.
Her focus in her major is on urban and regional planning. There, she uses urbanization theory and relates it to location theory to draw relevant conclusions. Referring to the many stereotypes about geographers she explains, “Most people think that geography only deals with maps. Yes, we are experts in maps, but we do not just study maps. What we do in geography is more complex than that. We do calculations and utilize software such as GISs and Remote Sensing”.
When she first heard that she would go to KNU, Aileen was rather surprised. “When I got confirmation from the International Student Center Office in my home university, I was really surprised that I will go to Korea for my exchange program and that KNU will be my new campus for my exchange period”. However, Daegu soon became her second home, and she says she loves everything about the city, from the environment to the food.
During her leisure time, Aileen enjoys travelling, hiking, and playing various sports such as badminton and futsal. She says that she loves to view the natural environment and scenery, especially since she is taking environmental management as her minor.
Academically, she especially enjoys giving presentations with her fellow Korean classmates and seeing how her international experience is improving her “soft skills” such as English language and communication. She states, “When I become a new graduate, the main criteria that employers will look for will be my soft skills. A Bachelor's diploma is not enough to guarantee me a job in the future. With strong soft skills, I will be more confident to interact with others when I step into the professional world”.
As advice to fellow future graduates and job seekers, Aileen refers to the words of one of her professors: “Just know, when you truly want success, you’ll never give up on it. No matter how bad the situation may get.”
