Student of the Month - Hubert Grotkowski
Hubert Grotkowski is an exchange student from Poland. He is currently studying for a Master’s Degree in spatial economy (land management) at University of Warsaw. For several years Hubert had an interest in Korea, so last year he decided to apply as an exchange student at KNU, and came to Korea for the spring 2014 semester.
Hubert spends most of his recreational time taking part in various sports, especially mountain biking and soccer. Often he goes on spontaneous travels to learn more about other cultures and to learn more about Korean language and culture:  “It’s one of the main reasons why I came to Korea”, he says, “even though it’s a very difficult language, I still enjoy acquiring new vocabulary or talking to Koreans.”
During his time in Korea he has taken several internships including UNESCO, CCAP, and a marketing internship at a fertilizer company located in KNU. He is also a dedicated member of the KNU student association as a Student Ambassador, where his main role is to provide assistance for international students. He was MC during the Opening Ceremony for international students, and volunteers his time whenever possible, helping organize festivals and trips. “I am also responsible for the promotion of KNU”, he says. “Thanks to this membership I have gained a lot of interesting experience.”
He also takes part in the Cross Cultural Awareness Program-UNESCO voluntary project to promote different cultures among students from various schools. The experience has allowed him to visit many high schools in Daegu and teach young Koreans about Polish culture, traditions, pop culture and history.
Upon graduation he plans to stay in Korean as long as possible. From his internships and experiences, he hopes to find a job in Korea related to his educational background and interests.
When asked what the best part of his exchange has been, he says “Thanks to my exchange program, I got great international experience and met so many great people in KNU… But the most important thing is that I got confidence and a sense of self-worth”. He goes on to say that now he knows he can handle any challenge: “I believe that I will find a worthwhile job soon and I can extend my wonderful adventure in Korea.”
