KNU Dormitory Finishes Stint as Living Care Center

Students will soon be moving back into the dorm after they are restored to their original state.

On March 8, KNU’s Cheomsung Gwan Dormitory was retrofitted into a Living Care Center at the request of the Daegu Metropolitan Government due to a lack of much-needed treatment centers.  KNU mulled the concern of the safety of university members and students’ right to study, but ultimately decided to share the struggle with Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province given its mission to serve the community and the community’s ongoing love and support for KNU over the decades.  In the process, there were concerns raised by the student council and KNU governing body, but the Daegu Metropolitan Government promised to meet with those bodies and handle the process from start to finish.  Daegu Mayor, Kwon Yeongjin wrote an open letter entitled “A Word of Thanks to Students at Kyungpook National University” on March 23 to express his gratitude to KNU students for their sacrifice during the situation and for joining the greater Daegu community.

Cheomsung Gwan housed 374 people during its time as a living care center, making it the largest of its kind.  KNU had a banner installed with words of encouragement for the medical staff and patients while faculty members collected 53.81 million won in donations to overcome COVID19 and delivered it to the Korean National Red Cross.  Citizens who were proven to be completely cured were discharged and expressed gratitude to the people who dedicated their hard work and time for the undertaking.  They also wrote a letter of thanks to KNU, students, and the medical staff.

Now the dorm will be reestablished as a residence hall for students, once it has been disinfected and made completely safe for habitation.  Students will be ready to attend classes once they migrate from the online platform back to the classrooms, scheduled for May 3.
