Kyungpook National University (KNU) will establish a Graduate School
of Data Science and recruit 50 new students for its master's program starting
in the 2022 academic year. This follows KNU’s recent notification by the
Ministry of Education that the new Graduate School of Data Science has
met the standards for establishment.
Data science is a field of convergence science that utilizes
scientific methodologies, processes, algorithms, and systems to extract
knowledge and information from various data. As data science has become a paradigm
relevant to all disciplines and industries, including humanities, social
sciences, medicine, sports, and culture, there is an urgent need to cultivate
relevant professionals within the field. At present, Seoul National University
runs the only Graduate School of Data Science.
KNU has continually pushed for the establishment of a Graduate School of Data Science to respond to the rapidly increasing demand for high-quality professionals of AI and Big Data, and to ultimately serve as a national hub for data science education. In July, an agreement on the development of data science was signed between Seoul National University, Chonnam University, and KNU.
As KNU is to establish the second Graduate School of
Data Science after Seoul National University, it plans not only to develop a
system for training excellent data science personnel, and but also to promote R&D
projects and linked educational projects through close cooperation with the
Ministry of Labor as well as the National Information Society Agency.
Won-Hwa Hong, President of KNU, states "Although data science is a discipline of high-tech industry that requires national attention in the training of specialized human resources within the field, the allotment by Korea to the training of specialists is relatively small compared to that of the United States, China, and Europe. By actively utilizing the relevant infrastructure of KNU, we intend to support students from various backgrounds to grow into professionals of global competitiveness in data management, analysis, and utilization skills."
