Kyungpook National University announced on July 6th that the “KNU ESD Changemaker Project,” carried out by the Department of Home Economics Education at the College of Education, has been certified as an official UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) project for 2022.

Since 2011, the Korean National Commission for UNESCO has been operating the UNESCO ESD official project certification system to discover and support best practices in ESD across the various fields where it is conducted in Korean society.

The “KNU ESD Changemaker Project,” conducted by the Department of Home Economics Education at the KNU College of Education, aims to enable pre-service teachers to find solutions to life problems that are closely related to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and then put those solutions into practice. The project connects education for sustainable development to various lifestyle topics, including digital vaccines, eco-friendly activities, animal rights protection, and e-mail management strategies. The official project certification begins from June of this year and is valid for a total of three years.

KNU Department of Home Economics Education Professor Hyo-rim Lee, who runs the project, noted, “It is important for pre-service teachers to make changes for both themselves and others in lifestyle areas related to the 17 SDGs. Using this certification as an opportunity, we plan to expand the operations of the project such that pre-service teachers of a wide variety of majors can develop expertise in the practice of ESD.”
