Kyungpook National University (KNU) held the inauguration ceremony for its 3rd Diversity Committee on November 11th at the Humanities Korea Building at the KNU Daegu Campus.
The KNU Diversity Committee, an advisory body directly under the university president, was established in 2021 to promote the protection and enhancement of diversity within the university and to foster a university culture that contributes to social harmony and development. The current 3rd Committee is composed of 17 members in total, including professors, students, staff, and external experts. Professor Yoon Youngsun of the KNU Department of Russian Language and Literature has been appointed as the Chairperson.
The inauguration ceremony was held under the theme "From Diversity to Universality, Our University as a Universe," and was conducted in two parts: Part 1, Inauguration Ceremony; and Part 2, Relay Discussion Session.
In Part 1, Professor Emeritus Noh Jeong-hye of Seoul National University, who previously served as the 6th Chairperson of the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea, gave an invited lecture on the topic of “The University and Diversity.” Professor Noh, who also served as the inaugural Chairperson of the Seoul National University Diversity Committee, emphasized her belief that "the institutional foundation of diversity within a university supports the sustainability of the academic community."
In the subsequent Part 2, Relay Discussion Session, students, professors, administrative officials, foreign faculty, and representatives from the Disabled Student Support Center gathered to share their on-site experiences and opinions on the topic of diversity and inclusion.
The Diversity Committee plans to regularize these discussion sessions to continue communication among university community members and facilitate institutional improvements. Furthermore, the Committee’s plan to hold the 2025 Diversity Essay Contest was also announced.
Chairperson Yoon remarked, "The Diversity Committee represents the university's promise as well as a platform for action to create a culture where all members are respected. We will work together to build a community where our differences become the strength of the university."
