Kyungpook National University (KNU) has been selected for all 16 unit tasks it applied for in the "2025 Regional Innovation System & Education (RISE) Project" promoted by Daegu City. As a result, the university will receive a total of 163 billion KRW over the next five years, marking the largest project budget in the Daegu region.

The RISE project is an initiative where the Ministry of Education transfers the authority for university financial support to local governments. This allows local governments to support university innovation tailored to regional characteristics and development strategies, ultimately fostering the mutual growth of both the region and its universities.

Daegu City conducted an open call for a total of 16 unit tasks across 4 major projects. KNU was successful in all 16 unit tasks (leading 15 and participating in 1). Accordingly, for the first year of funding, KNU secured 32.6 billion KRW out of Daegu City’s initial 76.5 billion KRW budget, with the five-year total funding amount reaching 163 billion KRW.

KNU has set its vision for the RISE project as "Mutual Growth of the Region and University as a Hub for the Regional Innovation Ecosystem." To achieve this, the university will focus on four core pillars: 1) Establishing a Daegu-specific innovative education ecosystem, 2) Cultivating leading talent for the so-called "D5 future industries,” 3) Building an industry-academic cooperation platform focused on employment and entrepreneurship, and 4) Creating infrastructure for young professionals to settle down in the area with local community support.

Notably, KNU was the sole university selected for the "Daegu-Specific R&D Life-Cycle Support System" unit task, securing 5.7 billion KRW annually. Additionally, the university secured 7.8 billion KRW per year in the field of "Core Talent Cultivation for the 5 Future Industries (D5)," which are considered central to Daegu's growth strategy: Future Mobility, Robotics, Digital Healthcare, Semiconductors, and ABB (AI, Big Data, Blockchain). KNU plans to invest aggressively in these areas to build a region-tailored R&D support system and strengthen the competitiveness of the D5 future industries through specialized talent development.
