KNU Expands International AI Cooperation with University of Florida, Signs Letter of Intent with AI² Center

Kyungpook National University (President Young-Woo Heo) visited the University of Florida (UF) in the United States to discuss international cooperation strategies in artificial intelligence (AI), and signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the AI² Center (AI Squared Center).
A KNU delegation led by Vice President for Research Dong-Seok Han visited the University of Florida for two days from August 4 to 5, 2026.
On the first day of the visit (August 4), the delegation met with David Norton, Vice President for Research at UF, to discuss ways to strengthen international research collaboration between the two universities.
On the second day (August 5), the delegation visited the UF AI² Center (Artificial Intelligence Academic Initiative Center) and held discussions with Center Director Hans van Oostrom and other key officials. The session included an introduction to KNU and conversations on specific topics of collaboration. Following the discussions, the two institutions held a signing ceremony for the AI cooperation LOI, signed by KNU Vice President for Research Dong-Seok Han and AI² Center Director Hans van Oostrom.
Established in 2022, the AI² Center serves as UF’s central academic entity for AI. It oversees the development of AI-related courses and certificates across campus while operating as a central hub supporting AI activities for faculty and students. In particular, through programs like the 4-day intensive "AI Learning Academy," the center enhances faculty competencies in AI fundamentals, ethics, and practical applications, directly integrating these into curricular and extra-curricular programs for student education.
The LOI signed between KNU and the UF AI² Center includes the following plans: develop joint educational curricula in AI; operate joint educational programs, such as short-term courses, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), and joint academic supervision; expand collaborative AI research through joint research projects and paper publications; conduct policy research on the AI transformation of higher education and mutual institutional benchmarking; expand academic exchanges, including student/faculty/researcher exchanges, joint conferences, and hackathons; and develop industry-aligned AI curricula, including university-industry collaboration projects and internships.
Building on the foundation established during this visit, KNU plans to continue expanding international research cooperation in AI, including pursuing a reciprocal visit by UF officials to KNU in the second half of the year.
