A KNU Statistics team has won the prize for excellence at the nationwide big data conference with their top-notch, eye-catching performance. The team, comprised of Gu Donghyeok and Bang Seulgi (class of 2011), Kim Jinuk (class of 2012), and Kim Dae-hyun (class of 2013) from the KNU Statistic Department, received the Korea Federation of Big Data Award and a cash prize of 3,000,000 Won on the 13th of November 2015 at the nationwide contest held at the Yangjae Tower in Seoul

Another team of students from the same department, comprised of Park Chiwon and Kim Gun Yub (class of 2011) also received the KT Data center award and a cash prize of 2,000,000 Won making them the second KNU team to win outstanding prizes at last year’s contests.

The Big Data Analytics Competition 2015, which was supervised by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, and the Korean Federation of Big Data Management, is geared towards the enhancement of big data usage.

A total of 406 teams participated in the contest, with just 14 receiving awards. In addition to their recognition, the award-winning teams will be provided with other opportunities such as internship opportunities with leading Big Data companies like SK Telecom, KT, Naver, and Daum.

Based on the knowledge they have acquired in their field, the KNU team developed an analytical model which uses such information as weather forecasting and day of the week to predict the number of spectators that will attend various events and performances. The model received attention as one that could be used by the entertainment and sporting industries.

The head of the statistic Department, Lee Gyeongeun, explained that students in this department have achieved excellent feats through various recent nationwide Big Data contests and have received some impressive rewards for their efforts. Dr. Lee is optimistic, and hopes that this will inspire and encourage more students to embrace Big Data and statistics as a field of study.
