On behalf of the Office of International Affairs, we look forward to welcoming you for the 2025 Summer School at KNU. In the meantime, we have included some useful information below to help you prepare for your learning adventure in Korea.
THE 2025 KNU SUMMER SCHOOL
KOREAN LANGUAGE CLASSES
We will be organizing two separate classes. Basic Class will be for students who cannot read the Korean alphabet and have never learned Korean before, and Intermediate Class will be for those who can read and make simple sentences. A textbook will be provided, and it is included in the tuition fee. The class topics are below.
Basic Class topics
- Class 1: Learning the Korean Alphabet 1 (vowels, consonants)
- Class 2: Learning the Korean Alphabet 2 (vowels, consonants, final consonants)
- Class 3: Self-introduction
- Class 4: Asking and Answering About the Names of Items
- Class 5: Ordering Food at a Restaurant
- Class 6: Talking about Current Activities
- Class 7: Asking about the Price of Items at a Store
- Class 8: Talking about Times, Dates and Days of the Week
- Class 9: Talking about the Weather
Intermediate Class topics
- Class 1: Can I have your phone number?
- Class 2: My bag is next to the desk.
- Class 3: I’m studying Korean.
- Class 4: I buy bread and milk.
- Class 5: Give me five apples.
- Class 6: It begins at seven o’clock.
- Class 7: Is the weather hot?
- Class 8: I took a walk in the park.
- Class 9: Shall we go to an amusement park together?
IMMERSIVE CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
We have prepared a variety of cultural activities: Daegu City Tour, Hyundai Motors Factory Tour, museum visits, Korean Movie Night, Tea Ceremony, Taekwondo, Samulnori Performance, K-food Cooking, attending a baseball game, Seomun Night Market, and temple stay (one night). The following cultural activities are subject to change.
Daegu City Tour
Palgong Mountain is a national park famous for its breathtaking views and cultural landmarks, including the iconic Gatbawi Buddha statue and Donghwasa Temple. Visitors can explore lush forests and peaceful hiking trails.
This is a modern art museum highlights contemporary works from both local and international artists. The sleek architecture and thought-provoking exhibitions make it a must-visit for art enthusiasts.
A tranquil spot for relaxation, Suseong Lake offers scenic walking paths, and a musical fountain show. It’s surrounded by cafes and restaurants, making it a popular destination. Perfect for a peaceful day out in the city.
E-world is Daegu’s top amusement park, featuring thrilling rides, festivals, and the iconic 83 Tower. Visitors can enjoy panoramic city views and dazzling night illuminations.
This museum showcases Daegu’s history and culture through artifacts, pottery, and traditional clothing. Interactive displays and educational exhibits make it engaging for all visitors.
As home to the Samsung Lions baseball team, this stadium offers an exciting sports experience. Visitors can enjoy the lively atmosphere, tasty snacks, and Korean baseball’s passionate fan culture.
Temple Stay at Donghwasa
Donghwasa Temple, located on the slopes of Palgongsan Mountain near Daegu, offers a renowned Temple Stay program that provides a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in traditional Korean Buddhist culture. Founded in 493 during the Silla Dynasty, this historic temple, known for its serene atmosphere and the iconic Great Buddha Statue, serves as an ideal setting for reflection, self-awareness, and a break from the distractions of daily life.
Industrial Tour
The Hyundai Motors Factory Tour provides a behind-the-scenes look at innovative car production. Watch assembly lines, learn about cutting-edge automotive technology, and see how cars are prepared for export overseas.
Other Activities
Korea’s traditional martial art, Taekwondo, focuses on self-defense, discipline, and physical fitness. Learn about its philosophy, which emphasizes respect and concentration. As an Olympic sport, Taekwondo offers a fun and active way to experience Korean culture while improving both the body and mind.
Samulnori is a traditional Korean percussion performance using four unique instruments: Ggochang, Jing, Buk, Kkwaenggwari. Feel the energy and rhythm that symbolize Korea’s vibrant cultural heritage.
Experience Korea’s serene tea culture through this traditional ceremony emphasizing mindfulness. Learn the art of brewing and serving tea while appreciating its deep cultural roots. Enjoy a relaxing and enlightening cultural activity.
Experience Korean cuisine by learning to make classic dishes or desserts in a hands-on cooking class. Discover traditional ingredients and cooking. It’s a fun and flavorful way to dive into K-food.
CREDIT & TRANSCRIPT
Credit
KNU Summer School classes are equal to one 3-credit course, titled “Global Culture,” and in order to receive the full three credits at KNU, students must successfully complete the Korean language classes and participate in all of the cultural activities.
Transcript
After the KNU Summer School program is completed, students can receive their transcript through e-mail in late September. We will send it to students directly and the coordinator from each student’s university. Students who complete the program will receive a transcript with a grade S (satisfactory), while those who do not complete the program will receive a grade of U (Unsatisfactory).
MEDICAL INSURANCE
It is mandatory for all international students studying in Korea to have an insurance policy that covers medical expenses in Korea. You can purchase an insurance policy in your home country. Please make sure it meets the requirements (minimum guarantees) as below. Please refer to the conditions below to see the recommended coverage for general medical expenses in Korea.
- 1) Medical benefits of at least $20,000 per accident or illness (sickness).
- 2) A deductible not to exceed 20% per accident or illness.
- 3) Repatriation of remains in the amount of $10,000.
- 4) Medical evacuation in the amount of $10,000 in the event an exchange visitor must be returned to one’s home country due to a serious medical condition.
CAMPUS DORMITORY
You will be assigned a room in an on-campus dormitory automatically. The KNU student dormitory houses both Korean and international students to provide an international atmosphere. The dorm rooms are double occupancy with twin beds, and there are NO single rooms. In addition, a wardrobe, desk, small bookcase and bedding are provided for each person.
Opening Date for the KNU Dormitory
The official opening date of the KNU dormitories is August 1st, 2025. You can check-in to the dormitory from 9am to 6pm on August 1st, 2025. Early or late check-in is NOT available. Therefore, if your arrival date is before August 1st, you should use off-campus accommodation, if needed. All summer school participants have been assigned Korean supporters, and your supporters may provide some help in finding off-campus accommodation.
Roommate Preference
Please note that all roommate assignments are random based solely on your gender, with 2 people per room. However, if you inform us of your preference in advance, we may be able to accommodate it. Once roommates are finalized, no one can change their roommate for any reason.
Cooking
Cooking is allowed on the 2nd floor, where gas stoves are available, but no additional kitchen tools are provided. Microwaves are also available on the 2nd floor, and shared refrigerators are located on every floor.
Curfew
A curfew is in place from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. to minimize disturbances for students. During this time, entry into and exit from the dormitory building are strictly prohibited. All residents are required to adhere to this rule.

Necessary Documentation:
Tuberculosis Test Result (any type, negative result)
A tuberculosis test result proving that you are tuberculosis-free (negative) is mandatory to check-in. It must be submitted to the Housing Office upon your check-in, and it is not possible to check-in to the dorm without this document. Any type of test is acceptable (such as chest X-rays, skin tests, and blood tests). The test result must be issued within two months prior to the check-in date and submitted in its original form and also in English or Korean if the original is in another language. Please prepare your test result in your home country before traveling to Korea.
VISA
Summer School Program participants need to contact the Korea Immigration Office in your own country about confirmation of visa issuance or allowable stay period in South Korea. If you need to apply for a visa, you must apply for visa type of D-2-8 (for visiting students). And, the Certificate of Admission required for your visa application, along with the business license of Kyungpook National University, will be sent to you via email in June 2025. Once you receive your Certificate of Admission, you will be eligible to apply for a Korean visa of D-2-8.
