Kyungpook National University (KNU) has recently partnered with private enterprises and the local government to build the first carbon neutral campus in Korea to promote carbon neutrality and regional energy industries.

The agreement on ‘Developing Carbon Neutral University Campuses’ between KNU, Daegu Metropolitan City, Hyundai Electric, and Tae Young E&C was established on May 10th at KNU’s Central Conference Room. This university, industry, and government collaboration provides a new model that aligns with the national government initiative to transition into a carbon neutral society by 2050. Most notably, KNU’s ‘Carbon Neutral Campus’ is to be a pilot project of the private sector facilitating an energy industrial ecosystem.

As the organizing institution, KNU will develop foundational research and development (R&D) and foster specialists on carbon neutrality, while Daegu Metropolitan City will offer administrative assistance and alleviate governmental regulations. Participating firms such as Hyundai Electric and Tae Young E&C plan to invest KRW 100 billion for the construction of a Zero-energy building and a campus Microgrid, while various governmental funds amounting to KRW 200 billion are also to be allotted to these sustainable development projects.

In undertaking the initiative on carbon neutrality, KNU aims to decrease the reported greenhouse gas emissions of 26,363 tons in 2017 to 0 tons by 2040, as well as nurture around 1,000 professionals on energy convergence and carbon neutrality. Furthermore, lasting effects are to be expanded not only to local elementary, middle, and high schools, but also to the entire city of Daegu, drawing the city closer to becoming a Smart Green City with smart industrial complexes.
