The Development of a Communication System to Overcome the Causes of Hereditary Deafness by The Research Team of Kyungpook National University
A research team led by Yeon Kyeong Kim (Department of Biology) and Gyu Yeop Lee (Department of Medicine) are expected to develop a CRISPR/Cas9 delivery system and a cure for poor hearing.
As a result of an aging population and so many people using portable devices, the number of reported cases of hearing impairment is increasing dramatically. Hearing impairment is a retrospective diagnosis caused by environmental factors, and at the same time a complex condition with more than 50 percent of genetic causes due to genetic mutation.
The research team developed technology that is securely transmitted inside the CRISPR/Cas9 system, known as third-generation genetic scissors, to determine the cause of genetic hearing loss and to treat it. Using harmless nanoparticles, the transfer was safely and accurately completed successfully.
Also, the acquired hearing impairment used the existing drug, AlphaGo, which is widely used in the market to identify its potential as a treatment and its application to animal models. It is expected that it will soon be able to be applied to clinicians more easily and quickly than developing new medicines through current methods.
