Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Innovation Platform (RIS) Achieves ‘Excellent’ Rating in Annual Evaluation, Securing Additional 4.8 Billion KRW in Government Funding

The Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Innovation Platform scored an 'Excellent' (A Grade) in the 2023 annual evaluation of the Local Government-University Cooperation-Based Regional Innovation Project (hereafter RIS Project). With this evaluation, an additional 4.8 billion KRW from the national budget was secured, resulting in a total of 75.18 billion KRW (including 52.63 billion KRW from the national budget and 22.55 billion KRW from the local budget) being invested in the project’s second year.
The RIS Project supports the Ministry of Education’s promotion of regional innovation by establishing a regional innovation platform centered on regional innovation entities such as local governments and universities. The Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Innovation Platform, which includes the participation of local universities, Daegu City, Gyeongbuk Province, and local companies, and for which Kyungpook National University is the supervising university, was selected for the RIS Project in May of last year and was granted an investment totaling 330 billion KRW over 5 years to reorganize the education system and promote human resource development in connection with local industry.
The Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Innovation Platform is an organization that carries out the following RIS Project objectives for education innovation: 1) Establishment and operation of Daegu-Gyeongbuk Innovation University (DGM), 2) Establishment and operation of joint departments between universities, 3) Operation of on-site and shared campuses, and 4) Operation of meta-campuses. In addition, it also carries out tasks in core fields, including 1) Fostering customized talent and supporting regional settlement, 2) Leading technology and product development, and 3) Supporting corporate innovation.
This annual evaluation measured the Platform’s first year performance, the achievement of performance indicators, and plans for the following year. The Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Innovation Platform provides and operates various extracurricular programs based on the Convergence Major curriculum that are tailored to the characteristics of consumers by classifying the types of available regional innovative talent. The evaluation recognized the programs as being successfully promoted as their practical collaboration was well established between the participating universities, local government entities, and businesses in the two key fields of electronic information devices and future vehicle conversion parts.
Jaeyoung Sohn, acting head of the General Operations Center of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Innovation Platform, noted, “It seems that all Platform members have been recognized for their efforts with the vision of creating a regional innovation ecosystem through collaboration with local governments, universities, companies, and innovation institutions. Based on the business foundation created in the first year, in the second year we will promote the project so that the results can be seen from the perspective of practical innovation in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions.”
