Kyungpook National University has renovated its Ilcheongdam pond area, a campus landmark, and the surrounding area into a complex community space, and held a renewal ceremony on November 15th.

Ilcheongdam is a pond modeled after the persimmon flower, the symbol of KNU, and originally created with the support of Chairman Ha Young-soo, the founder of Ilcheong Academy, an educational corporation. The pond and surrounding area have been loved as a resting place for university members as well as local residents for the past 60 years, but a renewal plan was developed due to aging of the original features and general safety concerns.

The renewal plan comprised a landscaping project covering an area of approximately 8,310㎡ surrounding Ilcheongdam Square, and the design process included input through public submissions, aiming to reflect the ideas of university community members. Construction began in June of this year and was completed after a construction period of approximately 160 days.

The newly renovated Ilcheongdam Square has an outdoor stage and grass stands for small performances, and stone railings have been installed around the pond for safety. A rose park and rose tunnel were created where a flower clock was previously located. By reinforcing nighttime landscape lighting, the new design provides not only increased safety but also pleasant views. In particular, the 45 seats installed around Ilcheongdam Square were prepared with funds donated by KNU alumni to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the university.

In remarks at the ceremony, Kyungpook National University President Hong Won-hwa said, “To mark the 77th anniversary of our school’s founding, we are re-introducing Ilcheongdam Square as a complex community space where communication and rest coexist. The change from Ilcheongdam Pond, which was simply pretty to look at, into Ilcheongdam Square, a wonderful place where people can enjoy culture together, will provide new opportunities for our members. I look forward to all the new memories that will be made here.”
