Bean steak, vegetarian ramen...Kyungpook National University introduces vegan (vegetable) menus at student restaurants

Kyungpook National University began offering vegan (vegan, vegetarian) menus at student restaurants in April. This is because more and more students have recently reduced meat or vegetarian food for various reasons.

Previously, Kyungpook National University student restaurants have made various attempts for vegans such as salad buffets. However, it is the first time among universities in Daegu that not only students who want to eat ethical vegetables due to animal rights and environmental issues, but also Muslims who need halal menus and students who do not prefer meat or do not want meat due to health.

The introduction of the vegan menu is the result of Kyungpook National University's veganism club "Begin" consistently demanding vegetarian options in schools through the student council and the student committee of the life cooperative.

In April, the Living Cooperative introduced vegan steak (bean meat) without cross-contamination, such as not cooking with cooking utensils such as animal food, and has been attempting to introduce and improve various menus such as vegan ramen and vegan bibimbap since May.

Currently, there are two restaurants with vegan menus introduced: Cheomseong Cafeteria and Information Center restaurants. Cheomseong Cafeteria began selling vegan steak and vegan ramen on April 12, while information center restaurants began selling vegan steak on May 10.

However, vegan steak is sold during lunchtime, and vegan ramen is sold from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Vegan bibimbap can only be eaten on the day the bibimbap menu is served, and soy milk is provided additionally without animal ingredients.

With the introduction of the vegan menu, the goal is to provide vegan meals at all events in the school so that various people can enjoy it, said the operator of the vegan club at Kyungpook National University.
